About Us

A little history……….

Cookeville First Church of God first met in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Allen Boles on September 19, 1962.  The congregation at that time consisted of 9 members.

The first “real” church building was located under the old Kroger store on Walnut St.  Money was borrowed to supply chairs, a pulpit, and a piano.  The donation of songbooks readied the group for the first service.

The first service that was held in the basement of Kroger was held on October 7, 1962 with James T. Hooten as minister.  Bro. Hooten preached all over the Cumberland Valley for over 50 years.  In less than a year, the basement was outgrown.

Construction was begun at the present location in April 1963, and work continued by the people until October 1963.  Services were held in the basement of the church while construction was put on hold on the upper floor.

Clyde Cunningham held the first revival in that same month.  With many fundraisers, construction was resumed on the upper floor in September 1966 and completed in January 1967.  On February 12, 1967, we moved into the sanctuary upstairs.
